I live far, far away.
I live far from town up a long country road where jungle meets country fields, oropendola birds dip their heads as they sing their songs, and howler monkeys lie about on branches chanting their jurassic calls.
I live in Escamequita. You’ve likely never heard of it. It is hard to find on a map but it does exist. If you ask after me on my country road people will point you in my direction.
If I’m at home, which I most likely am, I’ll be making art of and in my acres of jungle or visiting my chickens.
I know what it’s like to be a middle aged nun (in both senses of the word) cloistered, quietly praying her way around the garden. I’m retreating and restoring myself in this land, in this life. I spend a lot of time appreciating beauty and the small things like insects and seedlings.
It is hard to get me out into the world afar. I have discovered that there is much to do on a farm. There are baby chickens and turkeys and seeds to plant and a painting to be painted and never enough time to write words on a page.
I love people visiting who open the cupboards themselves to make a snack (and wash their own dishes) and come and sit with me working on their project as I work on mine. I love those who share their good company and kindred spiritly laugh and chat and then pull out their book or their journal and quietly we sit in purposeful companionship.
My place is my sanctuary. You are welcome to visit. If you must:)
Must is a calling. Are you called to the wilds, to the warmth, to colour, to nature, to art?
I write this on the eve of a retreat readying myself to share what I have.
If you visit me at the end of the country lane, where the oropendolas dip their heads and sing and the howler monkeys and the boy turkey wake you up promptly at 5 am nature will surround you with beauty in a rugged, tropical, vibrant kind of way.
With love,
Lucy

Hi Lucy, I had a dream last night that I was in the jungle, and I pointed down a side road and said “that’s where Lucy lives”. Isn’t that interesting?
